Clay Mathews serves as Of Counsel to the firm. Clay is a skilled litigator with experience in both state and federal courts. He has litigated and obtained successful results in complex property rights, inverse condemnation, land use, environmental and general commercial litigation cases. Clay has experience dealing with local governments all over the State of Florida handling and resolving various land use, property rights and eminent domain issues for business and property owners. Clay also has experience negotiating, handling and closing commercial real estate transactions for homebuilders and developers. Clay has been named to Florida Trend’s Florida Legal Elite “Up & Comer” and also been named a “Rising Star” by Florida SuperLawyers.
A Tampa native, Clay attended the University of Florida where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Finance, Master of Arts in International Business and Juris Doctor. During law school, Clay served as the President of the Association of Law and Business and was a member of the Florida Journal of International Law. While serving on the Journal, he won “Best Note” for his article which was published in the Journal’s 2013 volume. See 25 Fla. J. Int’l L. 311 (2013). Prior to law school, Clay was inducted into the University of Florida Hall of Fame and was a member of Florida Blue Key, Florida’s oldest and most prestigious leadership honorary.
After his tenure at the University of Florida, Clay moved back to his hometown of Tampa. Since moving back, he has played an active role in the community. He is a member of the William Reece Smith, Jr. Litigation Inn of Court, Tampa Connection and the After-School All-Stars Regional Advisory Board, a national organization which provides after-school programs for Title I schools in underprivileged areas. In his spare time, Clay enjoys spending time with his friends and family, going to Gator football games, visiting Boca Grande, running, fishing and playing guitar.
